About Moro Moro

Moro Moro is a town of approximately 1,500 people, seated in a valley in the Andean mountain range tracing across the South American nation of Bolivia. As when Moro Moro was founded in 1841, the majority of the current inhabitants of the small community earn their living through agriculture. Although Moro Moro sits approximately 7,000 feet about sea-level and the terrain is mountainous and unpredictable, the farmers of Moro Moro have had success cultivating a diverse group of crops. These crops, including potatoes, peaches, plums, apples, barley, wheat, and corn are sold at local markets or transported to the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra - a day's drive through the mountains.

Town life is centered on the church and the school. The school offers primary and secondary educational courses that correspond to U.S. elementary and high school. Additionally, the school offers various night courses. Altogether, approximately 400 students currently attend the school. Since the inception of the Moro Moro Scholarship Fund in 2000, student competition for top academic performance and behavior at the Moro Moro elementary and secondary school has become intense. This opportunity for higher education which cost relatively little in US dollars is highly valued by the youth of Moro Moro.

Prior to 2003, residents of the town had approximately 2 hours of electricity a day, while most of those living outside the town have no electricity.
